Açaizeiros can be grown in both organic (eutrophic) and poor (dystrophic) soils. Naturally found in lowland, igapó and dry land grounds, this native species predominates in lowland soils. The flowering of açaí occurs from the fourth year of planting, and can enter the production phase at 3 years of age. Whereas the longest flowering and fruiting periods occur both in the rainy season between January and May and the smallest rain between September and December.

Then the harvesting process takes place when the acai cluster has approximately 180 days of flowering. Its fruits can be as dark purple as dark green. The act of harvesting itself remains traditional and even rustic. So, it is necessary to climb the stem with the aid of a venom – a rudimentary belt-like tool.

Usually done in the morning, the successful harvest aims to prevent the collected bunches from having their fruits fermented during the hottest and rainiest periods of the day. In addition, in the early hours of the morning the stumps become less hot and slippery, which facilitates climbing on palm trees. Another issue that favors early morning harvesting is the time it takes to pack the fruits. This is because the fruits need to reach the large centers quickly to prevent the deteriorated açaí.

Family farming represents a significant part of Brazil’s production. In relation to social, economic and even environmental roles, family farming is of great value for food supply and job creation. In addition, of course, the maintenance of cultivated areas. In other words, fruit crops produce economically and sustainably for commercialization.

This socioeconomic model is based beyond exploitation. This means that workers, whether or not associated with self-management, will be aware of the development of this sector. And so, influenced by urban factors, market centralization and economic globalization, they adapt to the new molds of the production context and market perspectives. Guided by the issue of sustainability, of course.

That is the mindset of the Fruits of The Amazoninitiative. Our project seeks to implement this new market vision so that the local Amazonian population can continue to develop and yet maintain their traditions. Along with the preservation of the largest rainforest in the world. Contributing to everything from cultivation to collection, Fruits of The Amazon will help you help the Amazon.
